RIP V

Yes, it is that time of the year again!  Did autumn sneak up on you this year?  Because I feel like summer just started! No matter though, because I am ready to whip out my footie pajamas and lounge on my couch with a good book and some hot apple cider!

So for this challenge, I decided to go for Peril in the First.  I waffled back and forth, unsure if I would finish four books but I figured I would go for it and if I don’t read four, oh well–it certainly won’t be the first challenge where I fall short!

To qualify for this challenge, a book must meet at least one of the following categories.

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

As for my tentative list, here it is–

The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova

The Ask and the Answer, Patrick Ness

The Little Stranger, Sarah Waters

Faithful Place, Tana French

Mistress of the Art of Death, Ariana Franklin

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, John Berendt

Obviously my list is subject to change, as it typically does.

I am super excited to start this challenge.  For anyone who would like to join, you can find the sign ups here.

  1. Footie pajamas, a good book, and hot apple cider sound perfect — hooray for fall!

  2. I agree with Charley all the way! 🙂

For me, with little spring this year, summer seems to have went on forever and it isn’t over yet, unfortunately. I do hope it doesn’t drag on, I would like a proper autumn this year.

    Thanks for joining in.

  3. I can personally vouch for The Little Stranger and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. They are great books – I listened to Simon Vance’s audio of The Little Stranger and I recommend it.

I have been wanting to read The Historian for ages now. I also have Faithful Place and Mistress of the Art of Death on my TBR pile. The only book I’ve never heard of is The Ask and the Answer. I’ll have to go and check that out.

Good luck! I had so much fun with this last year.

  4. Ooh The Little Stranger is a good one!

  5. The Little Stranger is one I’m hoping to get to as well. Great list!

  6. The Historian is on my list as well. I couldn’t finish The Little Stranger as I was too scared, hope you have better luck!

  7. Great list! The Historian is a great read. I really hope to get to The Little Stranger, although now I’m worried since Sibylle was too scared to finish it! lol And I loooove the Chaos Walking series, so enjoy The Ask and the Answer! Have fun with the challenge!

  8. Love learning about new-to-me books.

The Ask and The Answer, that is the second book of a series, correct? It the sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go? If am looking at the correct book, and you read the first book, let me ask…
How did you like The Knife of Never Letting Go? If you liked it, would it be a good choice to add to my older girls pile of books…a themed pile such as this challenge’s them?

I have The Historian on my list, I hope to get to it. If you get to it, hope you like it, and look forward to seeing what you think.

    Have fun reading! 🙂

    • Yes, The Ask and the Answer is the second book of the series. I read, and loved, The Knife of Never Letting go any I would definitely recommend it, especially to fans of YA dystopian fiction.

      • Thanks for you reply. I am going to check out from the library The Knife of Never Letting Go and add it to the pile.

Fans of dystopian fiction? There are two of us in this house that are. 🙂

  9. YAY for the RIP. I will have to check out The Ask & the Answer, I’ve heard awesome things about Patrick Ness.

  10. \o/ for RIP
    I, too, agree with Charley.

I really enjoyed The Historian even though following 3 timelines at once was occasionally confusing. Just make sure you get a clear picture of each of the characters, so it’s easier to follow them from decade to decade.

Mistress of the Art of Death was an interesting plotline, but she almost lost me at the very beginning, because it was so obviously an (inferior) reworking of Chaucer. It got much better, and the penultimate scene was incredibly high on the creepiness scale.

I’m looking forward to your reviews!

  11. You’ve got a great mix of books there! I agree, what happened to Summer? Granted we still have temps in the 100s here so I still sort of feel like I’m in the middle of summer but definitely looking forward to fall and Carl’s challenge. Enjoy!

  12. I can’t wait for fall! The Historian is a great choice for RIP.

  13. Definitely, definitely read The Ask and the Answer. It’s wonderful!

  14. it’s hard to feel like autumn in florida but I love RIP anyway! Good list! I read t he Historian a few years ago and I like it, I hope if you read it you enjoy it too!

  15. Wonderful list for RIP!!

Please do check out the books I already read for RIP V.

  16. Great list! I enjoyed The Historian to a point, but the author is definitely a talented story-teller. As for The Little Stranger, I really loved it, and I’m not even a fan of Sarah Waters. It definitely kept me up at night. Just feeling the seasons change makes me want to read it again! Happy reading to you!

  17. I’m very excited about this one, too. I REALLY REALLY want to read The Historian this year because I’ve been putting it off forever. I think it’s in storage now, so I’ll have to go box diving!

  18. You have chosen great books for this challenge! Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil is a great read.

  19. Midnight in the Garden is fun. I hope you enjoy it. I know someone who just read Faithful Place and loved it.

  20. I never would have thought of adding Patrick Ness to my list. I’ve been wanting to read his stuff — I can’t wait to see what you think of it.

  21. I love this challenge and this time of year! You have a great list. I can’t wait to see which ones you actually choose. Happy R.I.P.ing.

  22. I’m reading the first Tana French book … I’ve heard so much good stuff about her. And I’m curious to see what you think of the Waters book … I have that one to read as well but didn’t think to include it. All in good time I suppose!

  23. Oh have fun…I can’t resist this one.

  24. “The Historian” is long — it took me forever to read that one — but maybe you’ll have better luck! I absolutely loved “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” — I hope you do too! Have fun reading during RIP V!

  25. I loved The Historian and The Ask and the Answer! I hope you do too– have an awesome RIP V!

  26. I loved The Historian; if you find time to read Dracula, and haven’t yet, you might enjoy reading those two together. They were both great! I want to read Tana French’s Faithful Place, too, but I don’t own it.

  27. Having just finished ‘The Little Stranger’ I’d definitely reccommend that one. It reminded me a lot of ‘Rebecca’ at times, which can only be a good thing. I also really liked ‘The Historian’ but that seems to be one of those books that people either love or hate, so I’m always wary of suggesting it to people.

  28. Looks like a good list, I have only read one of them which is The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, a spooky tale but unfortunately it didn’t really scare me at all so will be interested to see what you thought.

  29. I think The Little Stranger will likely end up on my list. If not that then something else by her… Maybe this will be the year I actually read The Historian! I have owned it since it came out. 🙂 Enjoy!

  30. The ask and the answer, from the title, doesn’t sound like a thriller book. The title itself makes me curious.

‘My list is subject to change’ << I guess all book lover having difficulty in staying in their list 😉

  31. I’m a new follower, glad to have found you from the RIP Challenge. I’m a moiod reader so my list changes all the time also.

    My post if interested
