Yes, it is that time of the year again! Did autumn sneak up on you this year? Because I feel like summer just started! No matter though, because I am ready to whip out my footie pajamas and lounge on my couch with a good book and some hot apple cider!
So for this challenge, I decided to go for Peril in the First. I waffled back and forth, unsure if I would finish four books but I figured I would go for it and if I don’t read four, oh well–it certainly won’t be the first challenge where I fall short!
To qualify for this challenge, a book must meet at least one of the following categories.
Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.
As for my tentative list, here it is–
The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova
The Ask and the Answer, Patrick Ness

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, John Berendt

For me, with little spring this year, summer seems to have went on forever and it isn’t over yet, unfortunately. I do hope it doesn’t drag on, I would like a proper autumn this year.

I can personally vouch for The Little Stranger and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. They are great books – I listened to Simon Vance’s audio of The Little Stranger and I recommend it.
I have been wanting to read The Historian for ages now. I also have Faithful Place and Mistress of the Art of Death on my TBR pile. The only book I’ve never heard of is The Ask and the Answer. I’ll have to go and check that out.

Great list! The Historian is a great read. I really hope to get to The Little Stranger, although now I’m worried since Sibylle was too scared to finish it! lol And I loooove the Chaos Walking series, so enjoy The Ask and the Answer! Have fun with the challenge!

Yes, The Ask and the Answer is the second book of the series. I read, and loved, The Knife of Never Letting go any I would definitely recommend it, especially to fans of YA dystopian fiction.

I, too, agree with Charley.
I really enjoyed The Historian even though following 3 timelines at once was occasionally confusing. Just make sure you get a clear picture of each of the characters, so it’s easier to follow them from decade to decade.
Mistress of the Art of Death was an interesting plotline, but she almost lost me at the very beginning, because it was so obviously an (inferior) reworking of Chaucer. It got much better, and the penultimate scene was incredibly high on the creepiness scale.

You’ve got a great mix of books there! I agree, what happened to Summer? Granted we still have temps in the 100s here so I still sort of feel like I’m in the middle of summer but definitely looking forward to fall and Carl’s challenge. Enjoy!

Great list! I enjoyed The Historian to a point, but the author is definitely a talented story-teller. As for The Little Stranger, I really loved it, and I’m not even a fan of Sarah Waters. It definitely kept me up at night. Just feeling the seasons change makes me want to read it again! Happy reading to you!
I’m very excited about this one, too. I REALLY REALLY want to read The Historian this year because I’ve been putting it off forever. I think it’s in storage now, so I’ll have to go box diving!

I’m reading the first Tana French book … I’ve heard so much good stuff about her. And I’m curious to see what you think of the Waters book … I have that one to read as well but didn’t think to include it. All in good time I suppose!

I loved The Historian; if you find time to read Dracula, and haven’t yet, you might enjoy reading those two together. They were both great! I want to read Tana French’s Faithful Place, too, but I don’t own it.
Having just finished ‘The Little Stranger’ I’d definitely reccommend that one. It reminded me a lot of ‘Rebecca’ at times, which can only be a good thing. I also really liked ‘The Historian’ but that seems to be one of those books that people either love or hate, so I’m always wary of suggesting it to people.
Looks like a good list, I have only read one of them which is The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, a spooky tale but unfortunately it didn’t really scare me at all so will be interested to see what you thought.
I think The Little Stranger will likely end up on my list. If not that then something else by her… Maybe this will be the year I actually read The Historian! I have owned it since it came out. 🙂 Enjoy!
The ask and the answer, from the title, doesn’t sound like a thriller book. The title itself makes me curious.
